Shopify Now Lets You Edit Subscription and Preorder Line Items Before Fulfillment in 2025

What Changed

Shopify has expanded the Order Edit API to support editing line items that contain selling plans, including subscriptions and preorders. Merchants and developers can now modify quantities, apply discounts, and remove line items with selling plans before an order ships—capabilities that were previously restricted. This functionality is available both through the Order Edit API and directly in the Shopify Admin interface.

Why This Matters

This update significantly improves operational flexibility for subscription and preorder businesses. Previously, the inability to edit these order types created friction when customers requested changes, quantity adjustments, or when merchants needed to apply last-minute discounts. For developers building custom order management systems, this opens up new possibilities for automation and customer service workflows without requiring order cancellation and recreation.
